Conference centre
The UCPSS 2008 symposium will be held in the Oud Sint-Jan conference centre in Bruges, Belgium. The site of ‘Oud Sint-Jan’ is the oldest hospital building in Europe. Until 1978 it was used as a hospital - since then, it harbours the Memling museum, the hospital museum, the old farmacy and the cultural centre where conferences and cultural activities are being organised.
The hospital was built to provide housing and care to pilgrims, passers-by and travelling salesmen. In the 19th century, the hospital has been reconstructed and modernised after the plans of architect Alderweirelt. Fortunately, the old buildings were left intact and can still be visited today.
In the 1970’s, a new, modern hospital complex was built in Bruges and after 8 centuries of functioning as a hospital, Oud Sint-Jan became a museum and a conference centre.

Bruges
Bruges is called “the Venice of the North”, and is maybe even the most well-known Belgian city in the world. The medieval city is unique: the look and the feel of the Middle Ages are present in the streets and buildings. A stroll through the city can be an enchanting experience: the combination of old, not so old and new fascinates everyone who first sets foot in Bruges.
